Walking School Bus (WSB): A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with one or more adults. It can be as informal as two families taking turns walking their children to school, or it can be as structured as a route with meeting points, a timetable, and a regularly rotated schedule of trained volunteers. More information on walking school buses is available in English, Spanish, and Chinese.
Walk to School Day (W2SD): A school-wide celebration that encourage walking, biking, taking transit, or carpooling to school. Events are typically held 45 minutes prior to the beginning of the school day. Students are asked how they arrived to school as they arrive near the main entrance(s). Results are typically tallied by classroom. This interactive engagement strategy creates an excellent structure for Golden Sneaker competitions and a forum for recruiting parent volunteers. Schools may give their W2SD a special name such as “Green Commute” or “4 Fun Ways Day”.
